China’s First Embedded HVDC Grid Test Success

State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Company Limited, a subsidiary of State Grid Corporation of China, has announced that the ±200 kV Yangzhou–Zhenjiang “embedded” HVDC power transmission project (first phase) has passed the full-capacity test, with all indicators meeting expected requirements.

The project will be completed in three phases and is situated in the Jiangsu Province of east China. Each phase is designed to have 1.2 GW transmission capacity, which translates to 3.6 GW overall capacity once fully complete. When finished, it will significantly improve Jiangsu’s power system’s ability to transmit power across the Yangtze River. The project is a first for the nation, converting existing AC lines into DC lines using an “AC-to-DC conversion” technique. Compared with the long-distance, large capacity DC transmission technology built by traditional interconnection methods, the embedded DC transmission technology generally uses existing overhead transmission lines and existing or reserved AC cable routes to build an AC-DC hybrid power grid.
