Across India, mornings are beginning to feel a little brighter. In lakhs of homes, the day now starts with a new kind of confidence. Fans run without worry. Children study under steady light. Kitchens hum with the comfort of reliable power. And when the electricity bill arrives, many families open it with a smile instead of anxiety.

For more than 15 lakh households, the bill has already fallen to zero.

Sodium-Ion and Zinc-Air Batteries: The Future of Sustainable Energy Storage

This quiet joy is at the heart of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, a landmark initiative launched by Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji to bring clean, affordable, and reliable electricity to 1 crore households across the country.

The promise is simple, powerful, and life-changing: eligible households can receive up to 300 units of free electricity every month through subsidized rooftop solar systems. With subsidies of up to ₹78,000 per household, the scheme covers more than half the cost of a typical 3 kW rooftop solar installation, making solar energy a practical reality for ordinary families.

For consumers, it is not just about saving money. It is about freedom from uncertainty. It is about dependable electricity. It is about participating in India’s clean energy future from one’s own rooftop.

A Movement Powered by People

The response has been extraordinary.

More than 1.2 crore households have registered through the national portal, reflecting the trust citizens have placed in the scheme and in India’s shift toward decentralized renewable energy. Over 30 lakh rooftop solar installations have already been completed, and the momentum continues to grow.

In semi-urban towns, villages, and city neighborhoods alike, families are discovering the same delight: their rooftop is no longer just a roof. It is a source of power, savings, and pride.

A household that once worried about rising electricity bills now sees sunlight as an asset. A family that once hesitated to use appliances freely now enjoys reliable, affordable energy. The scheme has turned consumers into active participants in India’s energy transformation.

Vendors See Their Fortunes Rise

The joy is not limited to consumers.

Across the country, nearly 20,000 vendors are witnessing a remarkable surge in business. Solar installers, technicians, service providers, and entrepreneurs are seeing demand rise sharply as households embrace rooftop solar at scale.

For these vendors, the scheme has opened a new chapter of opportunity. Every registration, every sanctioned loan, every installation request translates into more work, more income, and more local employment. The solar value chain is expanding rapidly, supporting jobs in installation, maintenance, manufacturing, logistics, and after-sales service.

Small businesses that once waited for limited local demand are now connected to a national digital marketplace. In city after city, vendors are being discovered by consumers through the portal, compared through transparent ratings, and selected with confidence.

The scheme is therefore doing more than lighting homes. It is energizing livelihoods.

A Portal That Makes Solar Simple

One of the biggest reasons for this success is the seamless digital experience created through the PM Surya Ghar Portal 2.0.

For the consumer, the journey is refreshingly simple.

Registration can be completed within a couple of minutes. The user enters basic details, follows an easy digital workflow, and begins the process without paperwork, confusion, or repeated visits to offices.

The loan process is equally transformative. What once could have taken days or weeks can now move with remarkable speed, with loans being sanctioned within a day. This quick access to finance removes one of the biggest barriers to rooftop solar adoption and gives households the confidence to move forward.

Then comes one of the most empowering parts of the experience: choosing a vendor.

Consumers can browse from among hundreds of vendors in their city, compare options, and select a star-rated vendor based on credibility and service quality. What could have been a complicated technical decision becomes a delightful digital experience. The household is no longer dependent on guesswork. The portal brings transparency, choice, and trust directly to the user. From registration to vendor selection, from financing to subsidy disbursal, the entire journey is designed to feel smooth, secure, and predictable as illustrated below

Seamless Technology, Visible Impact

Behind this simple consumer experience is a powerful digital backbone.

The platform connects consumers, DISCOMs, vendors, financial institutions, government systems, and agencies such as PFMS/DigiGov, NPCI, the DCR registry, and MNRE. Through API-based data exchange, role-based access, and multi-layered verification, the portal ensures that every step is secure, transparent, and reliable.

The mobile applications, trusted by over 1 million users and rated above 4.3 on the Google Play Store, further extend this ease of access to citizens across the country.

The Portal and Mobile Apps have been designed, developed, and maintained by Avion Software Technologies India under the guidance of MNRE. REC serves as the implementing agency, while NIC provides hosting and cybersecurity support.

This digital infrastructure has become the invisible force behind the visible transformation: faster registrations, smoother approvals, trusted vendor discovery, efficient subsidy processing, and greater confidence among citizens.

Clean Energy Becomes a Household Story

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is closely aligned with India’s long-term renewable energy goals and its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions. By promoting rooftop solar, the scheme reduces pressure on conventional power infrastructure, cuts transmission losses, and accelerates distributed clean energy generation.

But its greatest strength lies in the way it brings national ambition into everyday life.

A family sees its electricity bill fall. A vendor receives more business. A technician gets more work. A bank processes solar loans faster. A DISCOM gets cleaner distributed power. A city gains hundreds of new solar rooftops. And the country moves one step closer to a sustainable energy future.

This is the power of policy, technology, and public participation working together.

The Sunlit Road Ahead

As adoption continues to accelerate, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana stands as a compelling example of how a government initiative can deliver direct benefits to citizens while building a cleaner and stronger economy.

For consumers, it means reliable free electricity and lower bills. For vendors, it means expanding business and new opportunities.

For India, it means faster progress toward clean, affordable, and secure energy.

And for millions of households, it means that every sunrise now carries a new promise: power from the sun, savings in the home, and confidence in the future
