With global automotive manufacturers continuing their move towards more environmentally friendly, safe and energy-efficient sources of power, the solid-state battery segment of the market is now entering a critical part of its development. The shift to electric vehicles as a more widely accepted consumer choice is putting immense pressure on battery manufacturers to provide longer range, faster charging and greater levels of safety (both in use and for the environment). Solid-state batteries appear to be one of the best available solutions to these pressures.

A major advantage of solid-state batteries versus traditional Lithium-Ion technologies is that they use a solid electrolyte for energy storage, whereas traditional lithium-ion batteries use a fluid (liquid) electrolyte. Solid-state batteries’ associated characteristics have generated interest from both mobility and energy manufacturers due to their potential to provide improved energy density, reduced risk of leakage and improved thermal performance. As electric vehicle manufacturers continue to focus on improving their designs and consumer acceptance, these characteristics (potentially storing more energy in less space, safer and longer-lasting batteries) can provide significant advantages to their designs and associated consumer acceptance

The solid-state battery market is expected to grow rapidly, from $8.2 billion in 2025 to $156.8 billion by 2034, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 34.5%. The extraordinary growth of this industry is reflective of the transition of technology in energy storage and the need for improved safety and faster charging capabilities; all three of which are values that need to be addressed with increased energy density in multiple industries.

Why Solid-State Batteries Matter

Solid-state batteries could help provide longer ranges than currently available batteries. Consumers experience “range anxiety” while they are still concerned about finding access to electricity, and much of the U.S. does not have adequate electric charging infrastructures. Automakers need to develop batteries that hold more energy than current batteries but do not take up excess space and weight.

Charging speed can affect the convenience of an electric vehicle and dictates how quickly the vehicle will be charged. A growing number of people anticipate electric vehicles will be as fast as, or possibly faster than gas-powered vehicles. A growing body of research is underway on how solid-state batteries can be charged quickly enough using solid electrolytes, and if this can be achieved at a reasonable price, it could eliminate one of the main reasons why people do not buy electric vehicles.

Safety is also a significant factor in increasing interest in this type of battery. Li-ion batteries use liquid electrolytes and are subject to failure or leaking under extreme temperature and pressure conditions. Solid-state technologies provide the potential solution to these problems with solid electrolytes, since they are expected to have much better resistance to extreme heat than liquid electrolyte batteries, and are less likely to catch fire.

This provides solid-state technology with application appeal in both premium electric vehicles and mass-market products in the future.

Market Drivers

Longer ranges than currently available batteries can be achieved using solid state batteries and will help satisfy consumers’ “range anxiety” due to worries about finding electricity to recharge their vehicles. Currently the U.S. has inadequate infrastructure to support electric vehicle charging.

Automakers need to take energy density above current levels while maintaining compactness and lightweight.

Charging speed has an effect on how convenient an electric vehicle is and the amount of time needed to charge an electric vehicle. More and more, people expect electric vehicles to charge within the same amount of time as, or faster than, gasoline-powered vehicles. Research is being done to determine how quickly solid state batteries can be charged using solid electrolytes and, if this can be done at a competitive price, will eliminate one of the primary reasons people do not purchase electric vehicles.

Another important factor driving demand for solid state batteries is safety. Li-ion batteries use liquid electrolytes and can fail or leak when exposed to extreme temperatures and pressures; solid state technologies offer the possibility of solid electrolytes enabling superior performance under those conditions.

Technology and Development Challenges

Although there is much promise for solid-state battery technology, these batteries face substantial technical and commercial challenges. The biggest challenge that battery developers face is scaling up production of solid-state batteries while keeping costs low. Solid-state batteries are mostly comprised of advanced materials, both for their solid electrolyte and their manufacturing process—making mass producing solid-state batteries complicated.

In addition to scaling up production, battery engineers need to make sure the solid electrolyte is compatible with the electrodes being paired with it to ensure long-term use. Poor compatibility of the electrolyte and electrodes can lead to poor battery performance, instability and limited lifetime/durability. Also, some designs will experience mechanical stress during repeated charging, which could raise durability concerns.

Cost is still a key barrier to commercially adopting solid-state battery technology. Even though new solid-state battery technologies have been developed, solid-state batteries are still significantly more expensive to manufacture compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. Thus, without improvements to the manufacturing processes, the price difference between current production methods will likely keep solid-state batteries out of standard applications and restricted mostly to premium or specialized applications.

On the positive side, progress is being made at an increasing pace, with research teams and industry stakeholders continuing to invest in new materials for solid-state batteries; developing improved cell architectures; and developing scalable production methods. As innovation continues to occur, the gap between lab success and successful commercialization is continuing to narrow

Impact on Electric Mobility

Long-term effects of solid-state batteries will probably have a very large effect on electric mobility across the globe. If solid-state battery technology reaches commercial volume production, it will likely transform the design, construction and marketing of EV’s. Auto manufacturers will have the ability to develop lighter weight vehicles with a much larger driving distance and fewer safety issues. Consequently, this will enhance consumer experience when using electric transportation and assist in building consumer confidence in electric transportation.

For commercial fleet operations, having a more robust battery performance could lead to a decrease in (i.e. enhanced) downtime and enhanced routing; and thus, help to lower total operating cost over time. In cities, where smaller vehicles and limited charging times are particularly advantageous, solid-state batteries should have the potential to support wider scale electrification of urban mobility.

The technology could also significantly affect supply chains. Battery manufacturers, raw materials suppliers and vehicle manufacturers will each have to adjust their production processes and quality standards in line with this new technology. Companies that take action early to secure the necessary skills, resources and manufacturing capacity needed for the emerging solid-state battery market will likely have a greater market share than their competitors in that new battery manufacturing market.

Future Outlook

The solid-state battery industry will likely rise as storage solutions for the energy sector continue to search for safer, better performing, and longer-lasting solutions. Electric mobility remains the most significant area for growth, but the potential of this technology goes far beyond passenger vehicles.

Future progress in the solid-state battery industry is likely to depend on three key factors: reductions in capital costs, increasing manufacturing volume, and increasing consistencies in performance. If these factors can all be addressed, then solid-state batteries could become a key technology for moving into the next generation of electric transportation. As the shift toward more sustainable transportation continues, the companies who invest early in research, development, and future planning are likely to define what the market will look like in years to come. Solid-state batteries are more than just an incremental improvement; they will be a significant step toward the next generation of energy storage technology.
