Jaipur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (JVVNL) and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a 250 kW/250 kWh sodium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) pilot at K.L. Saini Stadium in Jaipur. The two organisations have also issued a request for proposal for the project.
The pilot will evaluate sodium-ion battery performance under actual distribution network conditions, including Rajasthan’s high summer temperatures. It will assess the technology’s potential to reduce peak loading on distribution transformers, improve the utilisation of rooftop solar power and defer network upgrades. Under the MoU, JVVNL will provide the site, operational data and a dedicated team, while the Global Energy Alliance will support system design, performance monitoring and training for JVVNL engineers. The findings are expected to help distribution utilities assess the technical and commercial suitability of sodium-ion storage for their networks.
