Agrivoltaics: Building the Future of Farming and Clean Energy Together

India’s renewable energy journey has been one of remarkable scale and ambition. Over the last decade, solar power has emerged as one of the country’s most important drivers of the energy transition, helping reduce dependence on conventional energy sources while accelerating the shift towards a cleaner economy.

Today, India has already achieved 50% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, five years ahead of its 2030 target under the Paris Agreement, while remaining committed to building 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. This remarkable progress signals that the next phase of India’s renewable energy story is no longer just about adding capacity—it is about integrating clean energy more intelligently into the country’s economic systems.

The next opportunity for solar will therefore not be measured only by the number of megawatts installed. It will be defined by how effectively renewable energy strengthens agriculture, improves rural livelihoods and creates long-term economic value.

Agrivoltaics offers one such opportunity.

Unlike conventional solar parks that dedicate land exclusively to power generation, agrivoltaic systems allow the same piece of land to simultaneously produce food and generate clean energy. Rather than treating agriculture and renewable energy as competing land uses, agrivoltaics demonstrates that both can coexist and reinforce one another.

This approach is becoming increasingly relevant as India’s renewable energy ambitions continue to expand. According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the country added 44.5 GW of renewable energy capacity in 2025, the highest annual addition on record. While this momentum is encouraging, it also raises an important question: how can renewable energy continue to scale without increasing pressure on valuable agricultural land?

The answer may lie in designing smarter land-use models instead of simply building more standalone infrastructure.

At Project Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh, developed by the Atria Group with its subsidiary Atria Renewable Private Limited, we are attempting to demonstrate one such model. Spread across approximately 600 acres, the project integrates elevated solar structures with active farmland, allowing crops and renewable energy generation to coexist on the same land.

The objective is not simply to generate electricity. It is to create a rural ecosystem where clean energy directly supports agricultural productivity and strengthens local economies.

Agriculture remains one of India’s largest sources of livelihood, but farmers continue to face multiple challenges—from climate variability and rising input costs to unreliable electricity and inadequate post-harvest infrastructure. Irrigation, cold storage, processing units, dryers and packhouses all depend on reliable power, and inconsistent energy supply often limits productivity and increases costs.

The challenge extends beyond electricity generation to ensuring reliable, long-duration energy availability. The Central Electricity Authority estimates that India will require more than 411 GWh of energy storage by 2031-32, including 236 GWh from Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), underlining that renewable generation and storage must increasingly be planned together.

Agrivoltaics allows this integration to happen at the farm level.

At Project Chittoor, the energy generated through agrivoltaic systems is intended to power shared agricultural infrastructure across farming clusters, including irrigation systems, borewells, cold storage, processing facilities and packhouses. Instead of depending entirely on external power sources, farming communities can utilise locally generated renewable energy to improve operational efficiency while reducing costs.

This represents an important shift in how we think about rural energy. Farmers are no longer only consumers of electricity—they can become active participants in India’s clean energy economy.

Equally important is the way agrivoltaics addresses climate resilience. Properly designed elevated solar installations provide partial shade that can reduce heat stress and evaporation for suitable crops while allowing cultivation to continue beneath the panels. As extreme weather events become more frequent, integrating renewable energy with climate-resilient agricultural practices will become increasingly important.

The larger lesson is that India’s renewable energy ambitions require integrated infrastructure models rather than isolated projects. Energy generation, agriculture, storage, processing and water management should not be viewed as separate systems but as interconnected components of rural development.

Project Chittoor reflects this philosophy. With a planned agrivoltaic capacity of around 6 MW integrated into a broader rural regeneration initiative, the project seeks to demonstrate how renewable energy can become foundational infrastructure that supports agriculture rather than competing with it.

This is perhaps the most important shift India needs to make.

The country’s renewable energy transition is entering a new phase. Success should no longer be measured solely by installed capacity, but by the resilience, productivity and economic value that renewable energy creates for communities.

India does not simply need more solar projects. It needs smarter renewable energy models that optimise land use, strengthen agriculture, improve farmer incomes and create resilient rural economies.

Agrivoltaics represents one such pathway. By enabling food production and clean energy generation on the same acre, it demonstrates that renewable energy and agriculture need not compete for land—they can grow together.The future of solar will not be defined only by megawatts. It will be defined by the models we build around them.
