Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has restarted one of the seven reactors at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant in Niigata region.
This marks the first restart attempt since the facility was taken offline after the 2011 Fukushima accident. The unit was switched on after an earlier restart was suspended the next day due to a monitoring alarm related to minor electrical current changes in a cable within safe limits and has since been addressed through revised alarm settings. The commercial operations are expected to commence on or after March 18, 2026 following another comprehensive inspection, while the plant continues to operate under enhanced safety measures including a 15 metre tsunami wall and elevated emergency power systems.
