The Ministry of Power (MoP) has constituted a dedicated task force to develop the India Energy Stack (IES), a unified, secure, and interoperable digital infrastructure for the country’s electricity sector. Positioned as a digital public infrastructure (DPI), the IES aims to address fragmented systems and enable standardised, real-time data exchange across the power value chain. The initiative is intended to support India’s transition to a $5 trillion economy and fulfil its net zero goals by enabling smoother integration of renewable energy, electric vehicles, and consumer participation in power markets.

The IES will facilitate unique IDs for consumers, assets, and transactions; real-time consent-based data sharing; open APIs for system integration; and digital tools for market access and innovation. A 12-month proof-of-concept will be undertaken to pilot the utility intelligence platform (UIP), a modular, analytics-driven application built on IES architecture. The UIP will be demonstrated through real-world use cases in partnership with selected utilities and discoms in Mumbai, Gujarat, and Delhi will participate in the pilot testing phase.

Additionally, the MoP will release a white paper for public consultation, followed by the creation of a national roadmap for IES rollout. A task force comprising experts from the power, regulatory, and technology domains will oversee the platform’s design, pilot implementation, and nationwide scale-up. The IES is expected to enhance grid reliability, improve discom efficiency, and deliver transparent and consumer-centric energy services.
