Egypt has formalised a series of renewable energy agreements covering wind, solar, and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects. These include plans to establish standalone battery energy storage systems with a total capacity of 5,620 MW. One of the agreements grants land usufruct rights for the 900 MW Shokeir wind project in Ras Shokeir. The project will be developed by a consortium comprising Orascom Construction, ENGIE, and Toyota Tsusho through its subsidiary AlEos, under the project company Shokeir Wind Energy.
Additionally, a power purchase agreement (PPA) has been signed for the Shokeir wind project. Furthermore, multiple other PPAs have been signed for several renewable projects across the country. These comprise a 2,000 MW solar plant and a 2,000 MWh standalone BESS in Nagaa Hammadi, as well as with two solar projects with capacities of 320 MW and 400 MW in El Oweinat. Egypt’s Integrated and Sustainable Energy Strategy targets increasing the share of renewable energy in the national energy mix to over 42 per cent by 2030 and 65 per cent by 2040.
In February 2026, the Egyptian Cabinet approved the implementation of four renewable energy projects by Kemet Industries Group, the executive arm of United Egypt Group for National Industries The approved portfolio comprises two solar plants in Bahariya Oasis with capacities of 320 MW and 400 MW. It also includes a 2,000 MWh standalone battery energy storage system in Nagaa Hammadi and a 2,000 MW solar plant in the same location. The projects are scheduled to be completed and commissioned in 2027.
