EDF Renewables has secured a 20-year Energy Storage Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Arizona Public Service (APS) for the Beehive Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) located in Peoria, Maricopa County, Arizona. This stand-alone battery system will feature a 250 MW capacity with a four-hour duration and is slated to begin construction in 2025.
The Beehive project, with a total capacity of 1,000 MWh, is expected to reach commercial operation by 2026. Beehive BESS will include lithium-ion batteries, inverters, transformers, and a substation, providing a sustainable solution to meet peak-hour energy demands by storing energy when renewable sources are abundant. This energy will then be fed back into the grid during high-demand periods to support APS’s increasing energy and capacity needs.
Earlier this year, EDF Renewables UK rolled out over 300 MW of battery storage to support the UK’s grid decarbonisation initiatives. Currently, the company has six storage projects in progress, all expected to go live within the next year.
