The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved an additional USD15 million grant to help Tajikistan enhance its ongoing project to reconnect its power grid with the Central Asian Power System (CAPS), interconnections with Uzbekistan.
The signing of a power trade agreement to restart the electricity trade between the two countries marked a step forward for a renewed regional energy network. This ADB-supported initiative involves constructing a new 22 km, 500 kV transmission line between northern Tajikistan’s Sughd substation and Uzbekistan’s New Syr Darya substation, increasing capacity for regional power trade among countries of CAPS and strengthen the infrastructure to prevent grid disruptions. The line project will also ensure the preparedness of Tajikistan’s power system to provide power and frequency regulation services for the smooth integration of renewable energy in the region. In the long term, it will be a key component of the Rogun hydropower transmission scheme in Tajikistan.
