The Ministry of Power has released the National Electricity Data Sharing Framework 2026 to establish common practices for sharing operational, commercial and technical data across the power sector. The framework aims to improve data accessibility and consistency while protecting sensitive electricity infrastructure information.
The framework covers central and state generation companies, transmission and distribution licensees and load despatch centres. Notably, participation is voluntary. To oversee implementation, the ministry has established the National Electricity Data Division within the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), along with a National Electricity Data Governance Committee chaired by the CEA Chairperson. Under the framework, datasets are classified into two tiers. Tier 1 covers public data that can be accessed without registration, while Tier 2 comprises access-controlled datasets available to verified Indian entities following registration and know your customer verification. The National Power Portal will also be leveraged to develop the National Electricity Data Portal for publishing open datasets and maintaining data inventories.
