India has crossed 300 GW of installed non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity as of July 31, 2026, reaching 300.50 GW, which is over 60 per cent of the country’s target of 500 GW by 2030. Non-fossil sources now account for more than 54 per cent of India’s total installed electricity generation capacity of around 552 GW. The capacity comprises 164.59 GW of solar, 58.14 GW of wind, 57.24 GW of hydro, 11.75 GW of bio-power, and 8.78 GW of nuclear power.
Solar power remains the largest contributor to India’s non-fossil capacity, increasing from 2.8 GW in 2014 to around 165 GW in 2026, while wind capacity has grown from 21 GW to over 58 GW during the same period. During the financial year (FY) 2025-26, India added 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity, including 44.6 GW of solar and 6 GW of wind capacity.
Furthermore, renewable energy generation increased from 190.96 billion units (BU) in FY 2014-15 to 477.79 BU in FY 2025-26. India’s domestic solar manufacturing capacity has also expanded, with the capacity enlisted under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers for solar photovoltaic modules crossing 200 GW as of July 2026, compared with 2.3 GW in 2014.
