The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has provided extension to renewable energy developers by treating delays arising from the Supreme Court proceedings related to the Great Indian Bustard (GIB) conservation case as force majeure and allowing extensions to project commissioning timelines.
The MNRE directed renewable energy implementing agencies to grant extensions for delays occurring between March 21, 2024, and December 19, 2025 a period during which interim judicial directions on overhead transmission lines in bustard habitats led to disruptions in wind and solar project execution in Rajasthan and Gujarat. The Ministry has not specified a standard extension period, leaving the assessment to be undertaken on a case-by-case basis. The MNRE has also advised the Ministry of Power and grid operators to consider providing relief on connectivity-related charges and transmission fees for affected projects. The decision follows a December 2025 Supreme Court ruling that upheld expert committee recommendations aimed at protecting the critically endangered GIB, including measures such as undergrounding select power lines and rerouting high-voltage transmission corridors.
