Salzgitter AG has laid the cornerstone for a 100 MW electrolysis plant for green hydrogen in Europe. The plant will generate approximately 9,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually for the production of carbon-reduced steel from 2026. This also marks the beginning of the industrial use of hydrogen in SALCOS which stands for Salzgitter Low Carbon Steelmaking. This is a programme by Salzgitter aiming for virtually carbon-free steel production.
Furthermore, this electrolysis plant will be built on an engineering, procurement, and construction basis by ANDRITZ. The company will use HydrogenPro’s pressurised alkaline electrolysis technology. The SALCOS programme is being realised in stages. These stages include a direct reduction plant and an electric arc furnace both of which are under construction. Additionally, it also consists of the 100 MW electrolysis plant for the production of hydrogen. Salzgitter AG is expected to launch these products by 2026 whereas conversion to virtually carbon-free steel production at the Salzgitter facility is anticipated to be completed by 2033.
