Iberdrola plans to add six BESS stations with a combined capacity of 150 MW to boost Spain’s energy storage capacity. The projects will be spread over Castilla y León, Extremadura, Castilla La Mancha, and Andalusia and will help integrate renewable energy into the national grid. Each of the six batteries will have a 50 MWh storage capacity and a 25 MW power output. They will use lithium-ion technology, which is known for its efficiency, maturity, and cost-effectiveness.

The BESS installations will function as hybrid systems when combined with solar energy sources, enabling the battery and photovoltaic plant to share a single connecting point. The projects have been designated as Strategic Projects for Economic Recovery and Transformation under the country’s renewable energy, green hydrogen, and storage division. One of the batteries will be installed at the Revilla Vallejera site in Burgos, Castilla y León, where the company will be launching its first hybrid wind-solar project in 2023. Extremadura will receive two batteries in Cáceres province, next to the existing photovoltaic installations C Arañuelo I and II.

In January 2024, Iberdrola and the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, managed by Norges Bank Investment Management, finalised a plan to double their clean energy investment partnership, adding 1,300 MW of additional renewable energy capacity to add more than €2 billion in joint investment over the next three years. Reportedly, 674 MW of wind and solar have been added to the alliance, with the rest to be included in the coming months, to reach a total capacity of 2,600 MW as of now.
