Following the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s (MNRE) recent subsidy increase for residential rooftop solar, the government has introduced a dedicated scheme called ‘Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana’ to install rooftop solar on 10 million households.

Prior to this announcement, the ministry had raised subsidies for residential rooftop solar to Rs 18,000 per kW and simplified the installation process through a notification. This initiative comes as rooftop solar installations have previously fallen short of targets. The MNRE initiated the Rooftop Solar Scheme’s first phase in 2015, revising it later due to slow progress. The 2019 lockdowns further hampered installations. The latest MNRE rooftop solar program aims to accelerate the deployment of rooftop solar until 2026.
