Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has approved funding for 126 large-scale energy storage projects under its latest incentive programme. The allocation totals €818.3 million and is co-financed through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the 2021-2027 period. The final allocation exceeds the initial €700 million budget after the call attracted 1,750 applications, prompting an increase of nearly 17 per cent. The selected projects are expected to add 2.2 GW of power capacity and 9.4 GWh of storage capacity across the country.

Among the approved projects, hybrid storage installations account for the largest share with 69 projects, followed by 39 standalone battery projects. Additionally, 15 thermal storage projects and three pumped storage projects have been selected. Hybrid storage projects are primarily paired with renewable generation, with solar power involved in 38 projects and wind power in 18 projects. Furthermore, nine projects combine storage with thermoelectric facilities, while four integrate both solar and wind generation with storage systems.

The programme, implemented under the PINALM-FEDER framework, complements other energy storage incentive lines financed through the national recovery plan, which have already mobilised an additional €730 million in investments. Moreover, all approved projects must be completed within 36 months of receiving final approval, with the deadline of December 31, 2029. The scheme is managed by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), an agency operating under MITECO, using ERDF 2021–2027 funds.
