Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and GPS Renewables Private Limited have entered into a joint venture (JV) agreement to develop compressed biogas (CBG) plants across India. The partnership aims to establish a series of CBG production facilities using organic biomass waste. It includes the conversion of agricultural and other organic residues into CBG using advanced waste-to-energy technologies.
The JV will initially target the establishment of 8 to 10 plants in the states of Bihar, Odisha, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. These regions offer substantial agricultural biomass potential, making them suitable for CBG production. The selection also aligns with BPCL’s existing geographical allocation for city gas distribution, which is expected to reduce logistics costs and improve operational efficiency. Further, the initiative also addresses multiple environmental concerns, including agricultural residue management to reduce stubble burning, greenhouse gas reduction through emissions control, and the promotion of sustainable rural development by building a structured value chain for agri-residue procurement and creating additional income sources for farmers.
