Central Transmission Utility of India Limited (CTUIL) has set minimum discharge durations for battery energy storage systems (BESS) seeking connectivity to the inter-state transmission system (ISTS). Projects eligible under the right of first refusal category must provide at least two hours of discharge, while other applicants, including standalone BESS projects at renewable energy pooling stations, must meet a four-hour requirement.
The revised framework also sets conditions for co-located renewable energy generating stations, including inverter capacity limits and charging arrangements. For eligible projects, the renewable capacity used to charge the BESS must match its storage rating. These facilities must be commissioned within the prescribed timeline, while grid charging remains subject to transmission availability. Meanwhile, pending applicants unable to meet the four-hour requirement may seek to increase storage capacity in MWh without raising installed power capacity in MW, subject to eligibility and other conditions.Relate
