The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has launched the second round of its Hydrogen Headstart programme, allocating up to $2 billion to accelerate the development of large-scale renewable hydrogen projects across the country. This round builds on the outcomes of the first phase and focuses on supporting projects that address key use cases and strategies to lower renewable hydrogen production costs over time.

The programme seeks proposals for initiatives that enhance plant design and construction to reduce capital expenses, improve electrolyser efficiency, and adopt flexible operations to optimise renewable electricity use. Additionally, it prioritises projects that strengthen end-use infrastructure for sectors such as green ammonia, iron and steel, alumina, as well as long-distance heavy transport like aviation and shipping.
