Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has commissioned a 126 MW floating solar project in Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh. The project, awarded by NHDC Limited for Rs 5.96 billion, utilises 213,460 bifacial glass-to-glass modules and covers a 260-hectare water body area located between the Indirasagar and Omkareshwar hydroelectric reservoirs in Khandwa district.
The installation provides power to the Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Limited (MPPTCL) and generates approximately 204,580 MWh annually, offsetting around 173,893 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. The project’s engineering includes mooring systems, wave breakers, and ballast anchors to handle fluctuating water levels and high winds. The project conserves an estimated 32.5 million cubic meters of water by reducing evaporation.
As a result of this addition, TPREL’s total renewable energy capacity has reached 10.9 GW, with 5.6 GW in development and 5.3 GW operational. The operational capacity comprises 4.3 GW of solar and 1 GW of wind energy projects.
In January 2024, TPREL, in collaboration with Chengmari Tea Estate, successfully commissioned a 1,040 kW bifacial solar system project.
