The Iraqi Minister of Energy and Siemens have signed an agreement to develop a strategic plan for enhancing the country’s power transmission sector.
As per the agreement, Siemens will establish five 400 kV power stations of 1,500 MW capacity each in several governorates, including the capital, Baghdad. Along with this, the country has also inaugurated expansion of the Al-Haidariya and Al-Najaf gas-fired power plants’ initiative under the agreement, with a cumulative capacity of 495 MW. This initiative is significant as Iraq relies heavily on gas imports from Iran for electricity generation, but due to the US sanction on Iraq, the payment for these imports becomes complicated. In addition to this, Iraq produced just over 27 GW of power, whereas the country’s requirement is around 48 GW for domestic consumption needs.
