GAIL (India) Ltd has plans to complete its first green hydrogen project next month. This 10 MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser is being set up at the Vijaipur complex in Guna district of Madhya Pradesh. This project is expected to generate 4.3 tonnes of green hydrogen per day with a purity of 99.999 per cent.

In 2022, Cummins had announced a partnership with Tecnimont Private Limited, an Indian subsidiary of the Maire Tecnimont Group, to build the PEM electrolyser for GAIL to produce green hydrogen. GAIL seeks to supplement its natural gas business with carbon-free green hydrogen and this project is a step in that direction. This green hydrogen would be mixed in natural gas for supply to industries.

Recently, GAIL India Limited signed an agreement with Shell Energy India to explore opportunities across the energy value chain. The MoU intends to investigate opportunities in the import and handling of various hydrocarbons that are important chemical and petrochemical precursors, LNG for road transport, regasification of imported LNG, renewables, and other areas.
