Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), in its recent submission to the prime minister on the national Power Development Plan (PDP) VIII, has estimated that Vietnam needs an additional 19,000 MW of electricity during the 2023-25 period to ensure supply.

The predicted power capacity includes 6.1 GW of thermal power, 4.3 GW of hydropower, 4.4 GW of onshore wind power, and 1.9 GW of imported power from Laos. It is estimated that four thermal power plants (TPP) aggregating 4,670 MW will become operational by 2025, in addition to 176 hydropower projects totalling 2,948 MW and 165 onshore wind power projects totalling 13,919 MW. As per MoIT, if these projects can be implemented as scheduled, Vietnam will have enough electricity.
