Today in this fast-paced world we procure an immense amount of energy expenditures from automobiles, network connectivity, electricity, etc., but the question is are we sustainable in our approach? Moreover, when we look at the current scenario the extent to which the energy is exploited is very high. With the increase in scarcity of energy, the demand for power plants has increased. Today every other state you see has an energy plant which is forming the major reason for pollution today. So, what if we transform our notions and move on to a better option that is more sustainable and viable for a longer period. In our daily lives we might encounter the word ‘green’, ‘blue’, and ‘grey’, these are the terms associated with hydrogen production.  Now here comes the major buzzword “Green Hydrogen”, a critical enabler of the global transition to zero pollutant emissions. When we look at this precious element that is Green Hydrogen, it holds great potential for enabling clean energy. Every other industrial sector is promoting clean energy today with zero pollution emissions and becoming more health conscious in nature. The recent success of renewable energy production has made us believe that today’s technology has the potential to build such great clean energy industries. Furthermore, making it is one of the best options for storing energy today. This is one of the major reasons for the growth of Green Hydrogen markets. And by the year 2050, green hydrogen will be forming the center for sustainable energy production.

What is “Green Hydrogen” and why it is important?

Green hydrogen is produced using low-carbon or renewable energy sources. Green hydrogen, which makes up most of the hydrogen market and is produced by steam reforming of natural gas, has much lower carbon emissions than grey hydrogen. One application is in the chemical sector, where it is used to make fertilizers and ammonia. A crucial component of the energy transition is green hydrogen. It is not the next step right away because we first need to speed up the deployment of renewable electricity to decarbonize current power systems, speed up the electrification of the energy sector to use affordable renewable electricity, and then use green hydrogen to decarbonize hard-to-electrify sectors like heavy industry, shipping, and aviation. It is crucial to emphasize that we already create a sizable amount of grey hydrogen, which has large CO2 (and methane) emissions. It would be essential to start decarbonizing existing hydrogen consumption, for instance by substituting green ammonia for ammonia from natural gas.

Benefits of adopting green hydrogen:

  • Sustainability

The green hydrogen does not emit any pollutant that is carbon dioxide majorly, during the combustion process or during the production of the energy

  • Versatility

It holds the transforming power. Due to the benefit of easily converting into electricity of synthetic gas, it is highly adopted for commercial, industrial, and mobility purposes.

  • Storing Capacity

The great advantage offered by green hydrogen is that it is easy to store, and it can be used at any possible time for multiple purposes. Immediate usage even after production is also possible.

According to the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) reports released in the year 2019, the world’s energy demand will rise by 25 to 30 percent by 2040.

In the year 2021, United Nations has come up with the initiative “Green Hydrogen Catapult” to bring down the cost of green hydrogen. As also its main goal is to transition from 25 Gigawatts to 45 Gigawatts for the green electrolyzers for better results by 2027United Nations Climate Conference (COP26) has highlighted Green Hydrogen in several beneficiaries like decarbonizing heavy industries, reducing pollution in aviation, and many more such environmental advantages.

The Future of Green hydrogen

Globally we know the level of pollution we are facing, and the smart decision today would be to adopt the sustainable approach to living for which green hydrogen has the potential. Where there is already a need for hydrogens, such as in the decarbonization of iron, ammonia, and other established commodities, we see the potential for quick uptake of green hydrogen in the coming decade. Green can be used in many industrial processes that utilize hydrogen. In the coming years, the aviation sector and automobile sectors will be dominated by green hydrogen due to its zero greenhouse production. Green Hydrogen Markets are a boon for people in providing better health through clean energy options. Also, it is likely to surge in the coming years. It would be interesting to see the current transition of grey hydrogen which is composed of pollutants to a much better option like green hydrogen in the future.
