NTPC Limited has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Indian Army for the sale of 200 kW renewable energy round-the-clock (RE-RTC) power from a solar-hydrogen-based microgrid in Chushul, Ladakh. The agreement will remain operational for 25 years, and is expected to enhance energy security in remote and high-altitude defence installations, reducing dependency on fuel transportation in challenging terrains.
The solar-hydrogen microgrid is designed to replace the Army’s existing diesel gensets, eliminating the need for fossil fuel logistics and reducing carbon emissions by 1,500 tonnes annually. Once operational, it is set to contribute to the decarbonisation and modernisation of defence infrastructure in border regions.
In October 2024, NTPC Limited collaborated with the Indian Army to establish a 200 kW solar-hydrogen microgrid in Chushul, Ladakh, at an altitude of 4,400 metres, replacing diesel generators with a sustainable energy solution that leverages hydrogen storage for a stable power supply in extreme winter conditions, ensuring energy self-sufficiency and reducing fuel logistics for remote Army locations.
