Korkia, a Finnish renewables investor, has teamed with Romania-based Econous Green Energy to build 600 MW of solar energy capacity in Romania. By 2025, the partnership’s first projects are expected to be licenced and ready for construction. A 600 MW photovoltaic system generates 780,000 megawatt-hours of power. The projects will generate enough renewable energy to power 200,000 homes across Europe.

The projects will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 300,000 kg annually, which is equivalent to the annual emissions of 120,000 cars. Reportedly, Romania’s energy strategy is ambitious and aims to increase renewable energy exports and strengthen its position in the European energy system. The country’s solar energy market is expected to expand by more than 7 GW by 2033. The current energy mix includes 40 per cent carbon-based sources.

In December 2023, Korkia and BIWO Renewables joined forces in a partnership to develop a total of 1 GW of photovoltaic (PV) capacity in Italy. The collaboration encompasses greenfield development with a diversified strategy across locations and technologies, including ground-mounted solar PV and agri-PV projects.
