India will import 251 MW of power from 12 hydropower projects in Nepal to be supplied to Bihar. With this, the total export of hydropower from Nepal comes to 941 MW. This will be supplied from 28 different projects.

According to the Indian embassy in Nepal, this decision has been approved by India’s designated authority for cross-border trade.

Nepal exported 39 MW of electricity to India for the first time in October 2021. This amount has grown by almost 24 times since then.

Nepal and India have reached an agreement for sale of 10,000 MW of power from Nepal to India within the next ten years. The first installment of the sale of 1,000 MW takes place this year, which at 941 MW, has been nearly achieved.

India will include hydropower imports from Nepal under the Hydropower Purchase Obligation (HPO) for Indian buyers. This will incentivise buyers to purchase power from Nepal.
