EDF Renewables North America and Masdar, joint owners of the Las Majadas Wind Project, have signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with data center company Soluna Holdings (Soluna). Situated in Willacy County, southern Texas, the Las Majadas wind project has a total installed capacity of 273 MW and commenced operations in 2021.
As per the agreement, Soluna will acquire up to 166 MW of electricity generated by the wind project to supply power to its upcoming data center, Project Kati, which will be constructed near the wind farm’s substation. Project Kati will utilise behind-the-meter electricity from the wind farm while adjusting operations based on market conditions to reduce consumption when the grid has higher demand.
This unique PPA framework offers a flexible approach to managing transmission limitations and curtailment, enabling efficient use of surplus energy while simultaneously supplying clean electricity to a high-demand facility focused on advanced computing, including AI applications.
