Coal India Limited has formed a joint venture (JV) with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RRVUNL) to establish a new subsidiary named CIL Rajasthan Akshay Urja Limited. This entity has been officially incorporated following the issuance of a certificate by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. The ownership structure of the JV allocates 74 per cent of the equity to Coal India Limited and 26 per cent to RRVUNL.
CIL Rajasthan Akshay Urja Limited has been established with the mandate to develop, construct, and operate renewable energy projects in Rajasthan. The portfolio of projects will include solar, wind, pumped storage, and other clean energy technologies. The power generated through these projects will be sold either to RRVUNL under Section 62 of the Electricity Act, 2003 or to other eligible entities as per regulatory provisions.
In May 2025, Coal India Limited signed a non-binding MoU with AM Green to procure 4.5 GW of renewable energy at an estimated cost of around Rs 250 billion.
