Amazon signs agreement with Engie to procure 473 MW renewable energy from wind farm

Amazon has inked a corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) with Engie to secure the 473 MW output of the Moray West offshore wind farm in Scotland. The deal is part of the e-commerce giant’s plan to run all of its operations entirely on renewable energy by 2025. The wind farm, which is slated to begin operations in 2024, will provide enough energy to power 650,000 UK households per year.

The Moray West offshore wind farm, with a total capacity of 882MW, is located in the Moray Firth, north-east Scotland. The project reached financial close in April 2023 and is presently in the construction phase. Ocean Winds, a joint venture between EDP Renewables and Engie, is developing Moray West. Over its lifetime, the wind farm will contribute $634 million to the Scottish economy. More than 1,000 jobs are anticipated to be created and maintained in Scotland during the building phase alone, with 70 permanent operating roles to follow.

In June 2023, Acciona expanded its existing power purchase agreement (PPA) with Amazon. The clean energy output from Acciona’s subsidiary, Acciona Energia will rise from 641 MW to 833 MW with the addition of 192 MW. The move is part of Amazon’s plan to entirely rely on renewable energy by 2025, five years earlier than its initial 2030 goal. The agreement would also assist the company in reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2040.
