ACEN Australia’s 900 MW Robbins Island Wind project has received approval from the federal government after more than eight years of assessment across all government levels. The project is expected to contribute over $30 million each year to the Tasmanian economy. The project is expected to supply electricity to up to 500,000 households.
Wind generation from the project will provide low-cost baseload power, and will be supported by hydro power generation that will focus on flexible, on-demand generation and storage. Additionally, the associated transmission line is undergoing a separate approvals process, which is expected to conclude in 2026. This will allow the project to commence operations in 2030. The project reportedly represents an estimated $3 billion investment.
Furthermore, the project will support both state and federal clean energy goals, including Tasmania’s target to double clean energy output by 2040, with half of that to be achieved by 2030. Following the federal approval, ACEN will further review the detailed approval conditions, and continue preparing the transmission proposal for its scheduled 2026 assessment.
