New Delhi: The Electronics Sector Skills Council of India (ESSCI) has partnered with the Aditya Birla Group’s Wires and Cables business to launch an electrician skilling programme aimed at training and certifying more than 40,000 electricians over the next year.

The initiative is designed to strengthen capabilities among electricians while promoting electrical installations and improving awareness of evolving electrical systems, materials and technologies. The programme is aligned with the Government of India’s Skill India Mission and is being implemented with the support of ESSCI.

The first phase covers West Bengal, Assam, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Training sessions are already underway, with over 1,600 electricians having been enrolled, according to the programme partners. The initiative will subsequently expand its reach, with more than 2,000 electricians expected to be trained in the coming weeks.

The curriculum focuses on practical areas including safe wiring practices, correct installation techniques, material selection, changing electrical load requirements and advanced wiring technologies. It also places emphasis on electrical systems and products that are becoming sophisticated, reflecting the growing demand for skilled professionals capable of undertaking installations safely and correctly.

Participants who successfully complete the programme will receive an ESSCI-aligned certification, along with a Professional Electrician Identity Card and a QR-enabled certificate that can digitally link to the electrician’s qualification and certification records. The initiative is intended to provide formal recognition of electricians’ skills while supporting professionalism and employment opportunities.

Commenting on the partnership, Madhvendra Singh, CEO, ESSCI, said, “The rapid evolution of electrical systems, products and installation practices makes continuous skill development essential. Through this partnership, we aim to equip electricians with industry-aligned capabilities that improve safety, quality and productivity at the ground level. Certification and digital recognition can also help strengthen the professional identity of electricians and create better opportunities for skilled workers.”

Beyond workforce development, the programme seeks to contribute to a stronger electrical ecosystem by encouraging engagement with electricians, supporting trust and recognition, and promoting access to installation knowledge. As India’s electrical infrastructure and technology landscape continues to expand, industry-led skilling initiatives such as this can play an important role in building a safer, more capable and future-ready workforce.

ESSCI, a not-for-profit industry-led organisation, works with industry and government stakeholders to develop skilled manpower and industry-aligned qualifications across the electronics and electrical ecosystem.
