Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp) has inaugurated its Manah 2 Solar Independent Power Project in Manah, Oman. The project has an installed peak capacity of 588 MW. It is Sembcorp’s first greenfield renewables development in the Middle East. The project is backed by a 20-year 500 MW power purchase agreement with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company.
Furthermore, when fully commissioned, the project is expected to produce 1.5 million MWh of clean energy annually. The project began commercial operations on 30th December 2024 after the completion of acceptance tests. The project utilises over 1 million bi-facial photovoltaic solar panels, which capture sunlight on both sides to maximise energy yield. It spans 6.8 million square meters in the Ad Dakhiliyah region of Oman.
Oman’s solar sector is rapidly expanding. Earlier in December 2024, TotalEnergies inked an agreement with OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE) to develop 300 MW renewable energy projects in Oman. This partnership will work towards developing three projects: North Solar, a 100 MW solar facility in Saih Nihaydah in northern Oman, and Riyah-1 and Riyah-2, two 100 MW wind farms located in Amin and West Nimr fields in southern Oman.
