The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has issued an order easing rooftop solar installation rules for consumers with sanctioned loads of up to 10 kW.
It has allowed a 10 per cent capacity tolerance for direct current (DC) systems, while ensuring the alternate current (AC) capacity of the inverter does not exceed the sanctioned load. Consumers with sanctioned loads lower than the required capacity can install systems up to 10 kW, with automatic enhancement of sanctioned load to match the capacity. Further, the distribution licensees are mandated to upgrade infrastructure, such as distribution lines and transformers, to support the increased capacity, with consumers required to bear costs related to security deposits and amendments to power supply agreements. Applications for rooftop solar systems up to 10 kW will be automatically approved without a technical feasibility study, expediting the installation process. Additionally, KERC has streamlined the application process for systems up to 150 kW, aligning with the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Amendment Rules, 2024, to promote rooftop solar adoption.
