Carrefour and GreenYellow Partner to Install 350 MW of Solar Panels in France

Green Yellow, a French renewable energy company plans to install more than 350 MW of photovoltaic (PV) panels throughout the domestic network of Carrefour, a grocery retailer located in France by 2027. A 20-year contract between the two companies will allow Carrefour to solarize 350 stores and hypermarkets and use the power generated for its own use.

The PV shading system will be established on the parking lots of 90 Carrefour hypermarkets and 260 supermarkets in the regions of Normandy, Ile-deFrance, Hauts-de-France, Grand Est, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie, and Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur. About 450 GWh of electricity will be produced annually by 180,000 parking spaces that will have installed PV panels, providing about 20 per cent of the retailers’ power requirements. The development phase of the system is scheduled to commence this month, with implementation set to commence as early as next year.

By the end of 2026, half of the program will be concluded. The self-consumption initiative will be implemented under Green Yellow’s third party financing model. It is believed to promote Carrefour’s objective of using only renewable energy by 2030 and lessen the effect of changes in electricity prices. The initiative will also support the retailer’s objective of generating one TWh of solar energy annually in Brazil, Spain, and France starting in 2027.
