EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company) has chosen EDF Renewables and Korea Western Power Company (KOWEPO), in collaboration with Masdar as the local partner, to develop the 1.5 GW Al Ajban Solar PV Independent Power Project. The project’s Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) was subsequently signed between EWEC and the stakeholders. This signing event occurred at the World Future Energy Summit.
Furthermore, the Al Ajban Solar PV contract was awarded by EWEC following a thorough procurement process. The PPA is structured as an energy purchase agreement, with EWEC paying for the net electrical energy supplied by the plant. The consortium will handle the design, financing, construction, and operation of the plant, which will be situated in Al Ajban, 70 km northeast of Abu Dhabi.
Reportedly, commercial operations are anticipated to commence in the third quarter of 2026. Once operational, the project is projected to provide electricity to approximately 160,000 households in the UAE and contribute to a reduction of Abu Dhabi’s carbon emissions by 2.4 million metric tonnes annually.
