Solar Technologies player Sun Stellar, on Monday, said that it has collaborated with DRDO – DIHAR Leh – Lab to design a sustainable solar space heating system using patented technology.

As per the company’s statement, the initial investment for the Solar Space Heating Project is approximately Rs 90 Lakh, with a payback period of less than three years.  This larger system covers an area of 3000 sqft, with 2650 sqft requiring heating with a lifespan exceeding 20 years with low maintenance requirements.

A pilot project was installed in December 2023, followed by a larger, upgraded system for the ADM Block in December 2024.

This system provided space heating for two rooms accommodating 8-9 soldiers, maintaining an ambient temperature of +20 degrees Celsius from 6:00 PM till 6:00 AM. Running seamlessly for over a year with zero maintenance, the system replaced conventional diesel boiler heating in the area.

The project’s primary motivation is to serve the Indian Army, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and promote a carbon-neutral ecosystem in high-altitude areas.

Sun Stellar is actively working with DRDO – DIHAR to implement solar energy-based space and water heating systems in high-altitude regions across India, including Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir Valley, Arunachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

“We thank DRDO – DIHAR Director OP Chaurasiya, Leh – Ladakh (India) and Scientist Sarfaraz for Showing trust in our organisation and allowing us to prove our dedication towards a Carbon Neutral Ladakh. After doing in-house R&D for two years, we executed this project. We give all the credit to our R&D Team, Manufacturing Team and Projects Team who worked hand in hand to meet the deadlines of the project and commissioned the project in subzero and low oxygen working conditions,” said Karan Taluja, Founder and Managing Director at Sun Stellar India.
