Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Limited (SWREL) has been given an order for engineering, design, procurement, erection, testing and commissioning of a 2×500 (1,000 MWh) standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) plant in Rajasthan.

The project expected to be completed by 2025. It is one of the largest GWh-scale projects in the world to be located in a single location.

India’s installed capacity for BESS is approximately 219 MWhr as of March 2024. The Central Electricity Authority has said that according to their National Electricity Plan 2023, the required energy storage capacity by 2026-27 is 82.37 GWh. Of this, 34.72 GWh should come from BESS.

In December 2024, SWREL had raised Rs 15 billion from qualified institution placement. In October 2023, SWREL had won an EPC contract of a 300 MW solar project in Gujarat from NTPC.
