SSE Renewables has purchased a fully approved 100 MW / 200 MWh battery storage project near Dungannon, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, from Heron Energy, a division of Heron Group. Pending a final investment decision by SSE Renewables, the project, ready for construction, will be built on an undeveloped area situated outside Coalisland, roughly five miles away from Dungannon.

Furthermore, the Derrymeen Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) would have the capacity to store up to 200 MWh of energy for flexible usage during peak demand periods by homes and businesses in Northern Ireland. It could supply backup power to the equivalent of over 135,000 homes in Northern Ireland for up to two hours when needed.

Additionally, the project would bring economic and employment advantages to County Tyrone and Northern Ireland during its construction phase. If approved for final delivery, construction might start early next year, with the system potentially becoming operational by the end of 2026.
