Scottish Government Greenlights 228 MW Smeaton BESS Project

The Scottish Government has approved the construction and operation of 228 MW project Smeaton Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) situated near Dalkeith in East Lothian. The project is part of Kona Energy’s ongoing collaboration with the Electricity System Operator (ESO) and National Grid to address energy constraints and enhance network stability.

In partnership with Zenobē, Eku, and Field, Kona co-authored a proposal for using batteries to reduce the public cost of constraints. Kona Energy, with advisory support from Opus Corporate Finance LLP, will soon seek investment to bring the Smeaton BESS project to market.
