NTPC has announced that it has been successful in the synthesis of carbon dioxide captured from flue gas with hydrogen produced from a PEM electrolyser. This was then converted into methanol at NTPC’s Vindhyachal plant. This is a big achievement in carbon management and sustainable fuel production as both the carbon dioxide capture plant and the carbon dioxide-to-methanol plant are the first of their kind in the world.

Additionally, NTPC is also working on Gen-4 ethanol, green urea, and sustainable aviation fuel. The company has also developed and tested ‘first indigenous catalyst’ for Methanol Synthesis and made substantial progress with hydrogen, carbon capture, and other innovative technologies.

In November 2024, NTPC announced that, through its research and development wing NETRA, will be setting up a green hydrogen production plant. The plant will utilise plasma oxy gasification of municipal solid waste (MSW) and agri-waste technology.

In October 2024, NTPC declared the results of its 1.2 GW interstate transmission system (ISTS)-connected solar projects auction. SEAL, Rays Power, and Refex Green secured a capacity of 300 MW, 100 MW, and 100 MW, respectively. They all had the same tariff of Rs 2.50 per kWh. On the other hand, ReNew Solar and Illuminate Hybren were awarded 300 MW and 176 MW at a tariff of Rs 2.51 per kWh. NTPC had allocated only 976 MW as of then.
