Freen OÜ announces the official European market launch of its horizontal-axis 20 kW model, Freen-H20. Designed for distributed wind energy generation, the Freen-H20 is engineered for efficiency, structural resilience, and compatibility with a wide range of installation sites.

Built for Power and Efficiency

The Freen-H20 is equipped with a 20 kW asynchronous generator and a planetary gearbox, delivering stable output with a rated rotor speed of 51 rpm. The turbine features a three-blade rotor with a 15-meter diameter, offering a swept area of 177 m².

The system uses a passive yaw mechanism guided by an aerodynamically shaped tail fin, and includes multiple integrated safety features:

  • Centrifugal tip brakes that deploy at high rotational speeds,
  • An electromechanical brake that activates when the system powers down,
  • Aerodynamic stall functionality that reduces rotor speed at high wind speeds.

The Freen-H20 is designed for IEC Class II wind conditions and can operate across a wide temperature range, from –25°C to +60°C.

Proven Engineering Inside the Nacelle

Freen’s engineers combined an asynchronous generator with a compact planetary gearbox to keep rotor speed constant at 51 rpm, maximising output and grid quality with minimal wear. A passive yaw system—guided by an aerodynamically profiled tail fin—eliminates electric yaw motors, cutting parasitic losses and simplifying off-grid operation. Safety is layered:

  • Centrifugal tip-brake segments deploy automatically at overspeed,
  • A spring-activated electromechanical brake engages on loss of power, and
  • The blade profile naturally induces aerodynamic stall in extreme winds.

These redundancies ensure reliable performance and low-risk operation across Europe’s diverse wind corridors.

Main Technical Parameters

  • Rated power: 20 kW
  • Generator type: Asynchronous
  • Gearbox type: Planetary
  • Rotor diameter: 15 m
  • Swept area: 177 m²
  • Rated rotor speed: 51 rpm
  • Cut-in wind speed: 3.5 m/s
  • Rated wind speed: 11 m/s (corresponds to 16.5 kW output)
  • Survival wind speed: 42.5 m/s
  • Total turbine height: 43.5 m (with 36 m tower)
  • Noise level: 45 dB (measured at 60 m)
  • Operating temperature: –25°C to +60°C
  • Design lifetime: 20 years
  • Total system weight: 4,870 kg (turbine + 36 m tower)

Tower height options include 12 m, 24 m, and 36 m, allowing adaptation to specific site conditions.

Annual Energy Production

The Freen-H20’s performance is validated through a certified AEP curve based on a Rayleigh wind distribution (K = 2). The turbine delivers consistent energy production across a range of average wind speeds. Specific AEP values are available upon request or through detailed site analysis.

Availability and Compliance

The Freen-H20 is manufactured in Estonia and built according to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 3834-2, and CE EN 1090-2 standards.
