During April-December 2023, coal-based power generation in India increased by 10.13 per cent, as compared to corresponding period of previous year while overall power generation grew 6.71 per cent during the same period.
The domestic coal-based power generation reached 872 billion unit (BU), registering a 7.14 per cent rise from the previous year’s 813.9 BU. The remarkable growth in coal-based power generation indicates a steady coal supply, meeting the escalating energy demands in the country. Despite a substantial 40.66 per cent decrease in coal import for blending (17.08 million tonne from 28.78 million tonne), India remains committed to self-reliance in coal production. Notably, more than 70 per cent of India’s total power generation is sourced from coal, playing a pivotal role in meeting the nation’s energy demands.
