The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has entered into an agreement with Oil India Limited (OIL) to establish a biogas plant in Nayapalli, Bhubaneswar, as part of a waste-to-wealth initiative. The facility will process wet waste from the city to produce biogas fuel.

The housing and urban development department has allocated 8 acres of land for the project. Once operational, the plant will initially process 200 tonnes of wet waste daily, with the capacity to expand by an additional 100 tonnes. The project is expected to be completed in two years.

Plans are underway to establish similar biogas facilities in other urban centres, including Cuttack, Puri, Rourkela, Sambalpur, and Berhampur. The biogas produced will be used as fuel, and the compost generated will support agricultural activities.
