Bharti Airtel has acquired a 26 per cent stake in a special purpose vehicle of AMPIN Energy Transition to develop a 50 MW wind-solar hybrid power project in Barmer, Rajasthan. The project will supply green energy to Airtel in a captive mode, connecting to a 220 kV grid and utilising interstate transmission networks to distribute renewable power across India.
The acquisition involves an investment of Rs 378.9 million in cash, with shares priced at Rs 10 each. The completion of the transaction is subject to approvals for grid connectivity and open access, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements for captive power consumption. The project, under AMP Energy Green Three, which was established in March 2020, is expected to commence operations by the second quarter of the financial year 2025–26.
This investment aligns with Airtel’s sustainability goals, including its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Airtel has been increasing its renewable energy footprint, with over 58 per cent of its network sites now powered by green energy sources. The company has solarised more than 15,000 sites and implemented the ISO 14001 Environment Management System to optimise energy usage and reduce environmental impact.
