The German Federal Network Agency announced that RWE has secured the N-9.1 and N-9.2 sites in the North Sea as part of the latest offshore wind auction. These sites, located about 110 – 115 km northwest of the island of Borkum, near the Dutch Exclusive Economic Zone, are each capable of hosting offshore wind farms with a total capacity of 2,000 MW. RWE’s winning bid for these sites amounts to €250 million.

Furthermore, the company will explore the option of collaborating with TotalEnergies on the development of these offshore projects. Investment decisions for the projects are anticipated by 2027 for N-9.1 and by 2028 for N-9.2. Subject to receiving the necessary permits, construction of the offshore facilities could begin in 2029 and 2030, with full commissioning expected in 2031 and 2032, respectively.

The offshore wind auction in August 2024 included three areas—N-9.1, N-9.2, and N-9.3—with a combined total capacity of 5,500 MW. Preliminary studies for these areas, conducted by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), have provided crucial data on the marine environment, subsoil, wind, and oceanographic conditions. The projects are entitled to grid connections planned for 2030 (N-9.1) and 2031 (N-9.2), with licences valid for 25 years and potentially extendable to 35 years.
