SECI has announced the winners of its auction to set up 1,000 MW/2,000 MWh standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS) under tariff-based global competitive bidding. JSW Neo Energy and Reliance Power have won and been awarded an equal capacity of 500 MW/1000 MWh. JSW Neo Energy quoted a tariff of Rs 381,000 per MW per month and Reliance Power quoted Rs 381,999 per MW per month.

The tender for this auction was floated in June 2024. According to the tender guidelines, any particular battery storage technology can be used and the BESS can be charged by any energy source. The scope of the project includes identifying land for the project, installation, obtaining proper approvals and interconnecting with the ISTS network.

In September 2024, SECI was awarded the Navratna status and released the list of winners for tranche 2 (Envelope-2 opening) of the electrolyser manufacturing auction, having a total capacity of 1,500 MW. In August 2024, SECI invited proposals for setting up green hydrogen hubs.
