Bhubaneswar, Odisha – Group Surya, through its flag-ship company Surya International Private Limited, proudly announces its latest milestone—a prestigious EPC Package for a Solar-Hydrogen BESS-Based Microgrid (200 kW) at Chushul, Ladakh. This project was floated by NTPC REL which is subsidiary of NTPC Ltd. This pioneering project, undertaken in collaboration with NTPC and the Indian Army, marks a significant step in harnessing Green Hydrogen for round-the-clock power supply in off-grid defense locations under extreme climatic conditions.
A Landmark Event in Renewable Energy for Defense:
The Honourable Defence Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh, laid the foundation stone through video conferencing for this groundbreaking initiative, accompanied by the Chief of India’s Defense Services, NTPC’s CMD, and senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Indian Army. This marks a historic stride in India’s defense sector, deploying a solar hydrogen-based microgrid system to ensure uninterrupted energy supply, independent of conventional power sources.
Project Overview & Strategic Importance:
Investment & Scale: Valued at INR 102 crore, this advanced solar-hydrogen microgrid will generate 200 kW/h of continuous power throughout the year.
Extreme Conditions: Designed to withstand temperatures as low as -30°C and function at an altitude of 4,400 meters, making it a technological marvel.
Decarbonization & Sustainability: The system eliminates reliance on diesel generators, reducing carbon emissions by 1,500 tons per year and fostering a clean, self-sustaining energy ecosystem.
Enhanced Energy Security: With Ladakh’s high solar irradiance, the system minimizes logistical fuel dependencies, strengthening India’s defense infrastructure.
A Salute to India’s Brave Soldiers:
Surya International is committed to maintaining this project under NTPC, ensuring not just reliable but unwavering energy support for the brave Indian soldiers stationed in these strategically significant terrains. The project’s location near the historic site of the Battle of Rezang La, where, in 1962, the 13th Kumaon Regiment valiantly stood their ground against overwhelming odds, underscores the profound significance of ensuring continuous and reliable energy in this remote outpost. This energy support honors the legacy of the heroes of Rezang La, celebrating their courage and the sacrifices made to secure these borders.
Words from Leadership:
Mr. Kamlesh Kumar Singh, Managing Director of Surya International, “During my visit to the site in September, I was truly moved by the tough conditions—the extreme cold and high altitude—where our Indian soldiers bravely serve. Seeing the Rezang La memorial made me realize even more deeply the huge sacrifices these soldiers make at the borders. ‘Boond boond se sagar banta hai’ (Every little bit adds up), and every small effort helps. Driven by their courage, I have committed to fast-track this solar-hydrogen microgrid project. It’s more than just a project; it’s our way of giving back to those who protect us, ensuring they have dependable support while they guard our frontiers.”
Surya International’s Expertise in Hydrogen Projects:
The company has successfully executed one prior hydrogen project and is currently executing another.
Hydrogen Mobility Station Project in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, for the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC). EXECUTING
Alkaline Hydrogen Electrolyzer Design & Manufacturing for HPCL in Bangalore, developed with BARC’s technology support. EXECUTED
With each milestone, Surya International reinforces its commitment to sustainable energy innovation, proving its mettle in decarbonization, energy security, and technological excellence.
